1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Celestara (“we”, “our”, or “us”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use our mobile application SplitSmart (the “App”). SplitSmart helps you track shared expenses, split costs between friends and family, and optionally use AI-powered features such as receipt scanning and spending insights.
By using SplitSmart, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information when you use SplitSmart:
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (or equivalent credential) via Firebase Authentication. We may also store your display name or nickname if you choose to provide one.
- Expense & Group Data: When you create groups and log expenses, we store information such as: group names, member identifiers (e.g., email or user ID), expense titles and descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, who paid, and how expenses are split between members. This data is stored in Firebase Firestore.

AI Feature Data: If you use AI-powered features (for example, receipt scanning or AI insights),
we may process:
- Images of receipts you upload;
- Text extracted from receipts;
- Derived metadata such as merchant name, date, totals, and categorized line items.
- Subscription & Purchase Information: If you subscribe to premium features (for example, AI enhancements or additional tools), purchases are processed through the app store platform (such as Google Play Billing). We do not receive or store your full payment card information. We may receive limited transaction data such as a subscription status, product identifier, and renewal information to manage your premium access.
- Usage Data & Analytics: We may collect non-identifying, aggregated usage information such as app screens viewed, feature usage (e.g., how often AI scanning is used), and basic technical data (device type, operating system version, app version, and general region) to help improve performance, stability, and product decisions.
- Communication Data: If we send you account-related emails (for example, verification, password reset, or monthly summaries for groups), we may record whether the message was delivered or opened to ensure reliable communication.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate, maintain, and improve the SplitSmart App and its features;
- Authenticate you and secure access to your account;
- Create and manage groups, expenses, balances, and settlements between members;
- Provide AI-powered features such as receipt scanning and spending insights;
- Provide and manage premium subscriptions and in-app purchases;
- Send important account-related communications (verification, password reset, notifications, summaries);
- Monitor and protect the security, integrity, and performance of the App;
- Comply with legal requirements and enforce our Terms of Service.
4. AI Features & Data Processing
SplitSmart may offer optional AI-powered features, including but not limited to: receipt scanning, automatic expense extraction, and AI-driven insights or summaries.
When you use these features, receipt images and relevant text may be securely transmitted to AI processing services to generate results. We use reputable providers that apply technical and organizational measures to protect your data.
- AI processing is used solely to provide the requested feature or improve related functionality.
- We do not sell your receipt data or AI outputs to third parties.
- We do not use your receipts to train public, open models that would expose your personal or financial data.
You can choose not to use AI features; core manual expense tracking remains available without them (subject to how you use the App).
5. Data Storage, Location & Retention
We use Google Firebase services (including Firebase Authentication and Firestore) to store account data, expenses, and related information. These services may store data on servers located in multiple regions, including outside your country of residence, depending on Google’s infrastructure.
We retain your data for as long as your account remains active, or as needed to provide you with the App. If you delete your account (or request deletion), we will delete or anonymize your personal data within a reasonable time, subject to any legal obligations to retain certain information.
6. Legal Bases for Processing (where applicable)
Depending on your location, our legal bases for processing your personal data may include:
- Performance of a contract: To provide the App and services you request.
- Legitimate interests: To maintain and improve the App, prevent fraud, and protect users.
- Consent: For certain optional features such as AI processing or promotional communications.
- Legal obligations: To comply with applicable laws and regulations.
7. Sharing of Your Information
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We may share limited information in the following situations:
- Service Providers: We use trusted third-party providers such as Google Firebase (for authentication and database storage), AI processing services (for receipt scanning and insights), and app store platforms (for subscriptions and billing).
- Group Members: When you join or create a group, certain information such as your display name, email identifier (where applicable), expense contributions, and balances may be visible to other members in that group so the app can function as intended.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal requests, or to protect our rights, safety, or property, or that of our users.
- Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or asset sale involving SplitSmart or Celestara, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to continued protection under this Policy or a similar successor policy.
8. Payments & Subscriptions
Premium features for SplitSmart (for example, extended AI usage or advanced tools) may be provided through subscriptions or one-time purchases via your app store (such as Google Play). All billing, refunds, and payment methods are handled by the respective platform under its own terms and privacy policy.
We do not collect or store your full payment card details. We may, however, receive limited information such as:
- Subscription status (active, canceled, expired);
- Product identifiers or plan names;
- Transaction or purchase tokens needed to validate your entitlement.
9. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including the use of reputable infrastructure providers, secure authentication, and access controls. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Device Permissions
The App may request certain permissions on your device, such as:
- Camera or Photos: To capture or upload receipt images for AI scanning or manual entry.
- Biometric or Local Authentication: To enable secure login or protect access to the App on your device. We do not receive or store raw biometric data; this is handled by your device’s operating system.
- Notifications: To send alerts for important updates, reminders, or group activity if enabled by you.
You can manage permissions at any time through your device settings, though certain features may not function properly if permissions are disabled.
11. Children’s Privacy
SplitSmart is intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
12. Your Rights & Choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including:
- Accessing the personal information we hold about you;
- Requesting correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
- Requesting deletion of your data or account (subject to legal obligations);
- Objecting to or restricting certain types of processing;
- Withdrawing consent where processing is based on consent.

13. Account Deletion
You may be able to delete your account from within the App (if that feature is available), or you can request deletion by contacting us at contact-us@celestara.ca. Once processed, your personal data and associated expenses will be deleted or anonymized within a reasonable period, except where we are required by law to retain certain information.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App, legal requirements, or our practices. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and we may provide additional notice within the App where appropriate.
